Self-esteem reflects a person's overall subjective emotional evaluation of his or her own worth. It is a judgment of oneself as well as an attitude toward them self. Self-esteem encompasses beliefs about oneself for example "I am competent" "I am worthy" as well as emotional states, such as triumph, despair, pride, and shame. Smith and Mackie (2007) defined it by saying "The self-concept is what we think about the self-esteem, is the positive or negative evaluations of the self, as in how we feel about it.
Self-esteem is attractive as a social psychological construct because researchers have conceptualized it as an influential predictor of certain outcomes, such as academic achievement, happiness, satisfaction in marriage and relationships, and criminal behaviour. Self-esteem can apply specifically to a particular dimension for example, "I believe I am a good writer and feel happy about that". Psychologists usually regard self-esteem as enduring personality characteristic trait self-esteem, though normal, short-term variations state self-esteem also exist. Synonyms or near-synonyms of self-esteem include self-worth, self-regard, self-respect and self-integrity.
Self-esteem are classified into two categories which are esteem for oneself in terms of dignity, achievement, mastery and independence and second is the desire for reputation or respect from others. For examples, status and prestige. In order to achieve self-esteem for the staff, RBS company need to satisfy most basic needs under esteem needs first in the Maslow’s hierarchy, which are physical needs, safety needs and social needs.
Physical need is like shelter, food, warmth, air, sleep and bodily functions. For safety needs, people had to feel safe in their environmental and protection from elements. For example of safety in security , body , employment , resources, morality , the family , health and property . Next is social needs, it is refer to the fact that we want to feel part of something we share in such as friendship, trust and acceptance, receiving and giving affection and love.
Thus, RBS already provide these basic needs to their employees whenever they employ the new employees in RBS Company. Beside that RBS also creates an opportunities for its communities of employees world-wide to share the common goals and vison for the group. The RBS creates opportunity by rewarding the employee who contribute a good performance and success through their commitment and hard work.
After that, when the employee have achieved three needs (physical, safety and social needs) then they achieve self-esteem by need to feel valued. Thus, the employee will feel that what they do are important and accepted by the company when the employer listen to them. Then, when their employee have achieved self-esteem, RBS company will be offering recognition, promotion opportunities for they to get the highest in Maslow’s hierarchy of self-actualization needs. From there, the employee have a chance to develop a lifelong career with the Group.
