God loved the birds and invented trees. Man loved the birds and invented cages. (Jacques Deval, Afin de vivre bel et bien)
The idea of a zoo dates back to olden ages when the dog was first domesticated by the cave men . These dogs provided security companionship and also helped man to hunt and thus survive during those times . Later on indigenous races of human beings were also confined for fun and entertainment proving the superiority of one race over another However in this modern era the question is do we have the right to keep animals in confinement ? Man is the most superior creation on planet earth and so confinement of animals is nothing but a proof that we exercise our power to control other smaller creatures . A number of animal rights activists are questioning the institution called ZOO ,People have supported zoos partly because they feel it gives protection to endangered animals and also serves as a platform for scientific and educational research on animals . Moreover as more animals are becoming extinct , our future generation might never get a chance to see such exotic creatures if they are not preserved somewhere . But how much ever we try can we really replicate the natural environment ? Can we provide everything what these animals would have enjoyed in a natural habitat ? Can we really play Mother Nature ? These are the questions which we need to ask ourselves before we support the zoos . zoos are dreadful because they exploit and abuse living creatures for the entertainment of the crowd, and in so doing so cause and perpetuate immeasurable suffering.
One of the reasons for the bad effects of zoos is a loss of real conservation. Today animals are endangering since their habitats are shrinking because of pollution, less food, and destruction of the ecosystem. Many kinds of animals were sent to zoos because of people who argued that we need to save endangered animals. However the environment of zoos is not suitable for animals and not the same as their environment. Because many animals in the zoos are separated from their families and friends and they live in new groups which are made by raisers who treat animals. These unnatural social groups sometimes lead to fighting's which lead to injury and loneliness. Also the creatures are always fed by feeders so their natural hunting instincts decrease.
Another reason for bad zoos is small enclosure."I know zoos are no longer in people's good graces. Religion faces the same problem. Certain illusions about freedom plague them both."(Martel 19). The quote above from the book life of pi depicts ,that in a zoo animals are not provided with freedom due to lack of space. Many zoos are operated by private organizations not government and these private zoos mainly operate for money. So they work to make money from the animals. They always open their zoos and welcome the visitors who visit to look
