Ban on Smoking
How to do feel about banning smoking in your city? I if you are a non-smoker you would probably say "Yes, It is not good." But if you are a smoker you would say "No" because you like the freedom of having a cigarette anytime you want. I am not a smoker, so I side with the non-smokers who are in favor of banning smoking in public areas. Are you aware of how many non-smoking areas exist in your city?
There is a lot of legislation that is being considered and has passed banning smoking in public places. You can tell which areas are banned by the display of non-smoking signs. You can also see signs in areas that are designated for smoking. For example, most hotels offer smoking and non-smoking rooms. Most restaurants also have separate areas. I always prefer the non-smoking areas because I do not like the odor of tobacco smoke and usually hold my breath when passing by the smokers. Do you think there are more smokers or non-smokers?
The answer depends on the area and culture, but in my city there are a lot of non-smokers and they are very health conscious that is one of the reasons the legislation is passing. Not only do the non-smokers outnumber the smokers but even smokers area very aware of the dangers of tobacco smoke and second hand smoke. Many smokers even ban themselves from smoking in their car or inside their houses you will see them having a cigarette outside on their porch or on their balcony. Many of these smokers are parents or live with other non-smokers and self-ban in respect to them. While it seems excessive and restrictive there are more and more places where smoking is not allowed and now city's want to ban smoking even outside. The reason for these new laws, are to protect the health of our community from second hand smoke.
While non-smokers are healthier than smokers, they still can get lung damage and even lung cancer from exposure to second hand smoke. Other breathing problems like emphysema can also occur. Smokers are not only at risk of these diseases but they are constantly contributing to their own death and many already have done irreversible damage and now have black lungs from continuous smoking. People who are pregnant and have health issues are even more susceptible to second hand smoke. Children and teens are also along those who can be most damaged because they are still in the development stages of their life. While the people writing these new laws are doing it to protect us, It is sad that smokers can't see how damaging their behavior is and stop.
Instead of making law makers pass these laws they should make stop smoking programs more available and even mandatory for people who smoke. There are step programs that slowly weed you off you addiction and there are patches and gum that also help stop the cravings to smoke. If we can
