Statistics in the Workplace
Within this assignment I propose to address my use of statistics while managing information. I intend to apply my understanding of the importance of effective handling of information while using examples of data collection gathered within my workplace to analyze my methods for recording and processing information. One of my key responsibilities within the case management department is to collect, analyze and monitor data. There are many different methods I can use to communicate to members, colleagues and managers that display data to ensure effective operations within my workplace.
How are statistics used in your workplace?
Within my role as a case manager spreadsheets are extremely useful in cumulating and capturing data. They allow you to display numeric data in the form of tables and charts whilst also having the advantage of being able to incorporate mathematical formulas for speed and accuracy. However, the disadvantage to this method is that no spreadsheet is watertight. All spreadsheets depend upon the input of correct information. One of the major factors within my workplace that contributes to the effectiveness of operations is use of e-mail to send spread sheets and other relative data that relies heavily on the daily communication with members, colleagues, (internal and external) and management to aid in the smooth and efficient running of the department.
What is one example of descriptive statistics used in your workplace?
One use of descriptive statistics in my department is to compile a weekly and a monthly spread sheet. In the weekly spread sheet I have to do an analysis of the data showing the amount of members that are potential cases, open cases, closed cases, total case load, and unable to contacts. A telephone call is made to all potential cases and data is collected in the form of an interview and a decision is made, based on the data that is collected to decide if this member needs to be followed for case management. On the monthly spread sheet a summary of the weekly data is transferred into averages and percentages for the month. This information is sent to management, who reviews this data and then sends it to the IT department. The IT department is responsible for gathering all this data and transforming all the individual documents into a master spread sheet that is sent to the CEO, marketing department and managers to distribute among staff for review for corrections and improvement.
