According to Sherman Alexie in "Superman and Me", describes his passion for books and how it helped him overcome obstacles in his poor community.

Alexie was Spokane Indian, family of 7, poor, and living in a reservation in Washington. He learned to read at the age of 3. He teaches himself to read with a Superman comic book. His father was educated, an avid reader, and loved to collect books. However, he builds interest for books and decides to follow his father's footsteps.

First, he teaches himself to read how to read with a Superman comic book. At the same time, he learns the structure of a paragraph. He applies everything in his life as well as his family to understand a paragraph. Alexie finally understands that each paragraph is what makes a book. Since then, his curiosity level expands his thoughts, ideas, and dreams within his childhood.

Reading was his life and every time he learned something new. In school, he was bullied by students because he was different. He had a mindset where kids in the reservation hadn't developed yet. Although, he wasn't discouraged by his surroundings because he knew he was lucky and smart. Alexie believed he was going somewhere in life.

Alexie grew up, went to college, and became a writer. His love for books helped shape his lifestyle, hoping he can do the same in his community. He goes back to encourage young Indian kids in the reservation because he sees potential. He knew deep inside he had a story tell, a story to make a difference.
