Settings of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Hogwarts. In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, there is one main location, along with other small ones. The main one is known as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hogwarts is a large castle, containing over ten floors of dormitories and classrooms. Around the outside of the school are vast amounts of trees and gardens, and even a large lake that the students tend to sit by. The castle is made from gray stones with black shingled roofs. On the inside, the walls are lined with portraits of past teachers, headmasters, and even past students. The pictures are also known to move at random! There is a large dining room, known as the Great Hall, where the teachers and students gather for their meals every day. The meals are made by house elves, which are located in the bottom floors of the castle. There are four different areas designated to individual groups of students. The Slytherin House was designated to the dungeons, while the Gryffindors were up in one of the towers. Ravenclaw was in the highest tower, while Hufflepuff was on a main floor. The headmaster and teachers have their own quarters apart from the students.

Hogsmeade. Hogsmeade is the small town outside of Hogwarts that the students are allowed to go to on weekends. Hogsmeade contains many different shops, including a joke shop (called Zonko's Joke Shop), a sweets store (known as Honeydukes), and even a pub (named Three Broomsticks). This town is very small, with all of the stores tightly packed together and a small cobblestone road in the center.

The Shrieking Shack. One of the main conflicts in the novel actually takes place in this house. The Shrieking Shack is known all through Hogsmeade and Hogwarts as the most haunted house in England. We find out later, however, that the shrieks heard from the home were from a boy, now an adult, who is known as Remus Lupin. The Shrieking Shack is an old, rundown house that seems to be lolling to the side. The inside of it is not much better. In fact, all of the furniture on the inside is covered by a white sheet and a few layers of dust. The stairways were breaking in some parts and some of the floors were even inaccessible. The only known way to get here is through a hole in the Whomping Willow, and the only way to know about it is by getting the Marauder's Map.

Extra Information on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Side information. The Marauder's Map comes into play when George and Fred Weasley tell Harry Potter that they're giving it to him. By saying "I solemnly swear that I am up to no good." (Rowling 192), the map will open. After you are finished using it, however, you must say "Mischief managed", otherwise anyone could read it.
