For this assignment we interviewed Amy Lambourne, Who is the head of the Physical Education department at Tuakau College. Amy has been working at Tuakau for 4 years but 3 as a permanent staff member. Before becoming a full time teacher at Tuakau she was a relieve teacher, until offered a full time position. She has been head of P.E for a year now. As we said she works for Tuakau College which is a private school in the Counties Manukau region. It is a school of around 400-500 students and is growing each year. The students range from the years 7 through to 13.

The purpose of this assignment is to gain an understanding of the four parts of management and how they are used in sports organisations on a day to day base.

Part One

Planning:

1. Identify and analyse the objectives for this organization

The objectives stated for this organization are to teach the N.Z Curriculum to students from year 7 to 13. The teachers are giving two different standards of Curriculum, the first is for the junior students which are the years 7-9 and this is to teach P.E and Health to the junior students to gain an understanding and a growing knowledge of the P.E and Health subject's. For the NCEA students from years 11-13 it is to achieve NCEA in P.E and Health. This organization has two goals in place for a timeframe of 5 years and one each for the junior and senior sides of the school. For the junior school it is to have their students continuing to take P.E and health as options in the future and for the senor school it is to achieve their pass rate up to 75% of each paper sat.

B. What is strategic sport management?

Strategic management is a continuous process that involves attempts to match or fit the organization with its changing environment in the way that the can gain the most success from. It includes adapting the organization itself (via internal changes) to fit the external environment. Strategic management focusses on the strategic decisions whenever they are required. Strategic management deals with both the behaviour of the organization within its external market and its internal roles, processes, structure and decisions, to enable the organization to function at its best within its internal environment.

This is related to Amy Lambourne and her staff at Tuakau College through the way she sets goals for her and her staff and the P.E department and has a plan in place to achieve each goal. The way Amy goes about this is that at the start of the schooling year her and the other P.E department teachers sit down and talk about what they want to achieve and in how long they will have to achieve this goal. The goals set are usually to do with the student's results and what they want the students to gain from the year.

Organising:

Draw their organizational chart:

Board of Trustees (B.O.T)

Principal

Senior Management Team (SMT)

Head of Departments (H.O.D)

Staff.

D. Explain whether this organization has a centralised or decentralised structure

The organizational structure of Tuakau College is decentralised because the board of trusties (B.O.T) makes the decisions then it is sent from the principle to the staff. The difference between centralised and decentralised is that centralised is one person makes the decision and everyone follows. Decentralised is a group of people that make decisions then it is shared out. For example in the organizational structure of Tuakau College the board of trusties would make a decision that's good for the school, once the board has come to a decision they will notify the principle about the decisions they have made and the principle notifies the senior management team and the head of department which is then passed on to the staff and comes into effect.

E: Identify the function of Human Resource Management within your sports organisations:

In the school organization Human Resource Management can be found through setting goals for each teacher and identifying the individual needs of that member of the staff, having good relationships between staff members. The teachers are sent on courses to learn new techniques and new approaches on teaching a certain way and on how to get through to the more difficult students every so month. The Human Resource Management team also look after all the ideas that staff have on how to improve or get a better showing in a certain project and if staff members have any complainants or on the job stress. The HR also evaluates the employees to check that the staff's performance is keeping up with their expected results. So this would be done by the senior management team sitting in on classes and see how effect the teachers are and what they're doing right and what they're doing wrong by assing them every once or twice every term.

Leadership:

F: Describe two methods/strategies used by this manager to motivate/influence her staff?

The way Amy Lambourne motivates her staff is by leading by example. Setting the standard for the work load and by being professional, keeping organized and the assessments and unit plans getting checked every term she also does this by being the first to school in her department and the last to leave by putting in the extra hours she's showing her tea how passionate she is about her job and how much it means to her to be the H.O.D. The other way to keep the staff motivated is by simply communicating with her fellow staff. By asking her team what works and what doesn't and getting everyone's opinion about her idea's and improvement the school wants to make in the P.E department. In their gym area the office is a big office she doesn't have a private area this is because this way she keeps up the communication she has built. Her staffs feel like a team not like their being singled out. These two methods keeps the rest of the P.E department motivated and this shows off in the way they teach and the way the students show them the respect they deserve.

G. Explain the difference between management and leadership:

The difference between management and leadership is that a manager is entrusted by the company he/she is employed
