Since the 1960s, the amount of interest groups has increased rapidly due to broad economic developments, religious and moralistic movements and government policies. An interest group is an organization that seeks to influence public policies. There is a great amount of interests groups scattered around the United States. The main intent of interest groups is to influence the selections of public policy. The most specialized and even specific concerns can have numerous types of interests groups. Interest groups such as NARAL Pro Choice of America and The Human Rights Campaign are constantly evolving, expanding and always the main topic of debates.
NARAL prochoice of America is a very large interest group that is constantly gaining membership. This interest group believes that abortion is a private medical procedure that a woman may choose to undergo or to reject. In this view, abortion does not belong on the government agenda anymore then do other surgical procedures that some deem especially unwise. (Steiner, 1) This same interest group can cause a rather big stir up in a debate because they believe that they should promote its interest in maternal health and to protect the potentiality of another human life. Not only do they support a woman's choice in abortion they also support a woman's choice to take birth control and educating teens early with sex education. (Sarah par4) Some may say that this interest group can contribute to a healthy democracy just for the simple fact that they in a way stay neutral. Most would answer in a rather vague way just stating that it's the woman's choice to do with her body as she pleases. However, you may still have some that would state that it could hinder a healthy democracy because abortion is a very touchy topic, because most of the people who oppose abortion would either do so because of morals or religious views. For instance if one is known to be a Catholic assuming that most people know Catholics do not support abortion and this person can sit in a debate and say they are prochoice most people might find this person duplicitous. I chose this interest group because I believe that it is a woman's choice to determine her own future whether she decides to abort or to keep the child. I feel that the state should not interfere with an individual's personal rights.
