PART 2 (A): ISSUES/PROBLEMS OF THE CASE STUDY
- HOMEBOY VENTURES WERE NOT SELF-SUFFICIENT AND WERE STRUGGLING IN FINDING CAPITAL.
The Homeboy Industrial schedule of revenue and expenditures 2003 has shown negative profit margin. The business operations were far from profitable and had to be supplemented by 3 major fund-raising activities namely, a yearly dinner, a direct-mail campaign, and father Boyle’s speaking engagement. This could be an indication that Homeboy industries inability to control costs. Budget overruns or unexpected costs incurred more than budgeted estimates can result in a negative profit margin. Even when the target revenues are met, and cost of goods sold kept within projected estimates which was seen in the bakery and merchandise revenue, a negative profit margin can still occur if expenses incurred during the current period go beyond gross profit.
- DOES NOT HAVE A TANGIBLE GOAL IN ITS BUSINESS.
Unlike most business incubators, Homeboy Industries’ standard of success was vastly different. It stated mission was to assist at risk and former gang-involved youth to be contributing members of the community. With that in mind, the quantitative measures of success of Homeboy Industries were the number of past and current clientele as well in terms of how much an individual change. However, it does not incorporate a more tangible business goal into its organization. Homeboy Industries was not systematically tracking the number of “success” or “failure” of any kind. Even though Homeboy Industries is a non-profit organization, it has failed in determining a realistic and measurable goal that allow the organization to be self-sufficient and to operate more effectively. Thus, becoming dependent to public fund the sustain its organization.
- LACK OF MANAGEMENT RESOURCES AND HUMAN RESOURCES.
Some business unit in Homeboy Industries did not have full time general managers. Michael Baca as an operating manager often find found himself rushing between business and projects solving problems. In addition to that, Father Boyle had not implemented formal structures or consistent processes for making important decisions for Homeboy Industries. He made all the decision by himself and despite Father Boyle’s imperfection as a manager, the board of directors was usually sympathetic of him and did not want to challenge his management. This can be due to the lack of personnel in managerial position. Besides that, due to the lack of manpower or lack of right personnel staff, many ideas, even though it fits well with Homeboy Industries mission statement, can’t be executed.
