Advantages of parole
- Serves as a deterrent to violent conduct
- Reduces overcrowded prisoners Prisons are becoming overcrowded however parole gives a great advantage as they are released into the community and saves space, those who are granted parole have done not very violent crimes.
- Rehabilitation and reduces recidivism (explain recidivism) rehabilitation and reducing
- Reduces costs for the government and the public reduces the number of people imprisoned this saves money which costs tens of thousands of dollars per prisoner per year for both the government and the public who pay for the prisoners.
Disadvantages of parole
- The offender can re-offend
- Cannot survive on his own And be subjected to homelessness, chronic unemployment or substance abuse
- Rejection of the community the community may feel that the offender shouldn't be allowed back to society and this affects the offender's life as he is trying to adjust to life outside prison life.
- Unemployment a person on parole must have a job to meet financial expectations employers do not want an employee with a criminal record this forces offenders to find low-paying jobs.
- Cannot adjust back to society as they have to many rules and obligations to fulfil Explain Such as;
Criticism of the parole system
Criticized that:
- The offender walks free while the victim still suffers
- The offender can pose a threat to the public's safety and the victims
R Vs. Bayley Case
- 22 September 2012 is when he rape and murdered Jill Meagher
- She was walking home from a pub in Melbourne Brunswick
- Adrian Bayley was still on parole and bail when he murdered Meagher
- During parole Bailey king hit a man, 2 Rapes and then the rape and murder of Meagher
- Body was discovered 6 days later
- Adrian Ernest Bayley pleaded guilty to Meagher's rape and murder.
- Sentenced to life imprisonment
After this case the Victorian premier claimed that recent changes made Victorian parole system the toughest in the country.
