Our group will discuss on the topic which is roles of financial management of Maybank. We have chosen domestic bank which is Malayan Banking Berhad or Maybank as an example for our research.
Financial intermediaries play an important role in improving the economic growth of countries. There are various kind of financial intermediaries in Malaysia such as Maybank, CIMB Bank, Ambank, RHB Bank and so on. In order for Malaysia to achieve a high-income nation, our government has implemented the Open Door Policy for the foreign business. Hence, many foreign banks enter our financial market to share the profit. For instance, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad, Citibank Berhad, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad, United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd., and so on.
Based on the article, Maybank is celebrated success of its programme to financially empower the differently-abled in Philippines. They have forecasted and planned this programme which aimed to provide economic empowerment and improve the financial condition of the disabled community. For example, Napoleon was on the border of giving up with a series of business failures trailing him becomes successful after he joined the Reach Independence and Sustainable Entrepreneurship (RISE) programme.
Throughout this programme, we can conclude that Maybank has made a good investment and financing decision. Maybank has spent Php6.4mil (RM554,750) and they are looking to spend another Php34mil (RM2.9mil) in the next two years. According to Maybank Philippines officer in charge Hazli Abu Samah, they have also tailor-made a financial plan just for this programme. They allows the participants to open a bank account with a very minimal figure and also have access to loan applications to expand their business. It is said as a successful investment and financial decision as it has created a win-win situation for both parties. It is not only changing the life of the disabled community, but also creating the business opportunities for themselves. Maybank always aims for an objective which is closer to heart. They realize that their efforts should not be focused on the financial front only but also building an inclusive and resilient future for our people and environment in order to achieve the sustainable growth of their bank which has leaded them to achieve the success in the programme.
At the meantime, they are also looking at expanding the programme to Indochina next. They are the single largest financial institution to allocate such a big budget for the disabled and marginalized community. They want to expand their business and financial services abroad the nation. This is one of the investment decisions that they are heading to. According to Maybank Foundation chief executive officer Shahril Azuar Jimin, they have channeled about 1 % out of their net profits out of RM66mil in community investments towards society programmes which making them one of the most active corporate citizens in Asia.
