"A Personalised Induction Will Always Be More Effective"
When a client goes to see a hypnotherapist for a session it is an essential key to find out clues about them, to see what are there likes and dislikes and how they process. A hypnotherapist will usually in the first session try to get to know the client by having a general chat so that they can use an induction in the PMR which will be suitable for the client and make the experience more enjoyable. Clients should know that hypnothercapy is not a therapy but a process where a therapy can be effectively delivered.
Humans are unique and have very different value systems. Value systems represent what people believe in, their own moral code, a sense of right and wrong, good and bad, their priorities and also what they experience to be positive and negative. Prevailing social and cultural ideas influence people. In addition, a persons upbringing and individual life experiences will influence their value system. There are several techniques which hypnotherapists can employ which alter the language we use to suit the personality and individuality of the client. These are language (the words that we utter,) body language, tone and volume. However, body language is not one that hypnotherapists can use because the client will usually have their eyes shut.
I personally agree with the essay statement, a personalised induction will always be more effective because every client is unique and there needs are different. What one client might find relaxing in their induction, another might not be able to relate and relax to it. Each person has a different modality, these are: kinaesthetic, visual, auditory, olfactory and gustatory. Modalities are information that our brain receives from our senses which it represents it internally in a way that can allow us to assess it, whether we need to act on it or store it for future reference. Everyone uses their senses in a particular situation but they have a favourite which they are more comfortable with and are more likely to fall back on in times of crisis. When in a hypnotherapy session, if the hypnotherapist can ascertain the clients modality they can talk to them in a way that they will feel comfortable so they will relax. A client will find one of their senses easier to imagine in and so create their comfort zone. But a client can be comfortable in two modalities.
Kinaesthetic represents the feeling system, both internal and external, also how someone can feel about someone; namely emotions. Kinaesthetic people are more likely to tune into how other people are feeling and their emotions quickly before they've even spoken to them. The kinaesthetic system is used when people feel emotion, like when someone touches something or when engaged in a physical activity. A person who likes to touch everything before they buy something, who will see a sign that says 'Do Not Touch' and go straight in to touch it without thinking and they do not care if the environment if they are in is cluttered or messy as they can feel it, not 'see' it. Words that may be used by the client and are best to use back in screeds are: touch, smooth, gentle, move, warm, cold, solid and hold for example.
Daydreams, fantasy and imagination are all part of visual thinking. Everyone can visualise but for people who don't have visual modality as their primary one they can find it more difficult. They are normally more interested in drawing, media and being creative, they also like to be tidy and keep things looking good. Words that they commonly use and should be used back are: look, imagine, watch, bright, colour, references, insight and perspective.
Another modality is auditory, this is people who like music, talking and sounds in general. Some people may get upset and unable to concentrate if the sound is 'wrong' and not to there liking. Words that are best used with the auditory modality are: say, remark, resonate, harmony and discuss. Their voices will also be in a melodious voice style and speak at paces between visual and kinaesthetic speeds.
Additional modalties are olfactory, digital and gustatory. Olfactory is all about smell, gustatory is people that are use taste and finally digital is people who mostly think in language and symbols. These modalties are often secondary modalties but they can be a very strong influence.
Using modality is one way of personalising the screeds to achieve a deep hypnotic state in a person. Another way of personalising the screeds is to either put it in a permissive or an authoritarian style. The permissive style is open but it provides the client with control so they know they are safe in the hypnotic state. Words and phrases that are used in this style are such like: may, could, might. This style is not designed to be bossy and gives the client a choice to explore when in a deep state of trance. Because of this, the screeds can be more imaginative and it suits a client who feels they can have a wild imagination so it makes
