Why the Master's Degree Would Help Me Achieve My Professional Goals

Can a modern top manager be outside of the global business processes occurring in the world and still be successful? It is impossible to be effective when one does not pick up the latest developments in various fields of the economy, understand the rules of business, and not feel the "undercurrents" that govern the laws of competition in the world and in one's country.

Business education, and particularly business school, is designed to make the process of immersion in everything new and progressing highly effective for the senior manager. However, the role of modern business education is not limited to this. I imagine that business education in modern realities is a part of complex, specific objectives, which set the individuals who decide to attend business school, and devote a few years to enhancing themselves.

Why do people decide to attend business school and what are their expectations? In my opinion, there are several key groups of managers. First, there are those who need a psychological break to see what they want in life. These people wish to change the scope and their way of life. The second category contains the people who come to get a diploma of a certain brand, in an attempt to buy some prestige and a higher paycheck. The third type of manager strives to gain new connections and to place oneself into a new or possibly greater network. Managers in the fourth category really understand that they lack the needed knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit.

The category of managers that seeks to find a greater network will always be present, even with the growing communication systems. In reality, there is no replacement to being in a face-to-face type of environment with smart and successful people. Therefore, it is important for the modern business school to provide various opportunities for its students to meet and learn from others. In my case, it is especially important to find such opportunities. While participating in various international business trips, I appreciated the full benefits of routine contacts that I acquired more than once. Another important aspect is that the school should not be narrow in terms of what is taught. It is important to combine both hard and soft skills correctly. The business school needs to ask the right questions, and teach the various answers to them, because there will always be more than one possible solution, and wrong answer. Management is not just an academic knowledge, it must be said, thought, and felt. In this context, it should be noted that modern business education is based on modern business experience. This, in turn, means that the moral right to teach future executives lies with the specialists in the field, accordingly. For me, this criterion is very important, as I do not see myself learning useful lessons from outdated, though interesting laws of Adam Smith, or ways of a company's optimization of production that occurred decades ago.

The third feature of the modern business school and business education in general has to do with our inability in today's world to absorb all of the information that we are exposed to. There must be a filter, and a business
