Parker Study Skills Part 2

Vera VanPool

Liberty University Online EDUC 500

Abstract

I took the Parker Study Skills test during the first week of class. I had to retake it again this week and compare the differences between the scores of the two weeks. I think I gained some insight into how I study. I will show my comparisons for the two sets of score on the Parker Study Skills tests. Each section is scored and I will relate each score in comparison to the previous test score. I will summarize the total scores at the end and make a statement on how I think my scores changed and the relevance of the Skills test.

Introduction

I took the Parker Study Skills test in the first week of class. I took the Skills test again this week and I am going to show my tests scores in comparison with the first week scores and how I feel that it relates to how I study and what I may need to do to improve some of my scores in certain areas.

Test Scores

Time Management: My score this week 80.00, an increase of 14.67 over last test score. My score shows improvement, but I know I need to improve in my time management. From my daily life to my schooling and eventually into my classroom I need to learn how to more effectively manage my time. I need to find ways to help me organize my day and my hours better to incorporate all things within them.

Note-taking: Score this week 90.00, an increase of 3.33 over last test score. I know that my note taking is high; I have always been a note taker. I take notes when listening to lectures, or when reading a textbook. I take notes to keep track of our household. During this course I have taken notes as I read the coursework.

Reading: Score this week 73.33, the same score as the last test score. I would have thought this would have been higher. I am a reader, I love to read. But then again, when it comes to learning, just reading alone doesn't always help me retain information. I need to find a way to incorporate ways to retain while I am reading. My reading score did not change from the first test to this test.

Listening: Score this week 82.22, an increase of 2.22 over the last test score. I am a good listener. I listen so I can take good notes. By being able to listen we 'hear' more than most people. As a listening type of person we can tune in to what others are really saying. My score from the pre-test to this post-test improved just a little, I think that maybe I have picked up a few extra listening skills.

Test-taking: Score this week 78.00, an increase of 2.00 over last test score. I think there are better ways of assessing the learning values of lessons than by taking a written test. My test taking abilities fall into the fair to good range, which is acceptable, but I feel that sometimes taking a test doesn't get the whole point of what we learned, or giving a test doesn't get the whole point of what we taught. My scores improved a little from the pre-test, but I don't think my skills have improved in the test taking area.

Written Communications: Score this week 82.86, an increase of 8.57 over last test score. My written communications improved from the pre-test to the post-test. It is still fair to good. I like to write, to take notes. I am a writer, in that I keep in touch with the written word by hand on paper as well as email or technological ways. I think that my ideas of writing to communicate may have changed a little since the beginning of this course because I am writing more and communicating more through our discussion boards.

Stress: Score this week 80.00, the same score as the last test score. My stress is 80 so it is good to excellent. I'm wondering if that means I'm overly stressed, or handle stress well. My opinion of stress is that I think I handle it well. I try not to make any situation too stressful. My score did not change from the pre-test to this post-test, so I guess I handle stress in the same way today as I did a few weeks ago.

Career-oriented: Score this week 82.11, an increase of 8.42 over last test score. I rated excellent on career-orientated. This was a big improvement
