Have you ever had to take gym class? Everywhere throughout the United States gym class is a requirement. For basically every school it is a graduation requirement. If a student plays on a sports team for the school, then it should not be required to take gym class. It shouldn't be required for these students because sports keep you active and fit and adding this rule could increase the school's athletic participation.
Sports train students in being active and fit. That is the same thing that you learn in gym class. If you learn the same thing by playing sports as you do in gym class, you shouldn't be required to take it. Gym teaches the same thing year after year and never anything new. But, on a sports team, you learn new things every day improving your game. Sports teams benefit you daily and teach you lifelong lessons while gym teaches you the same things all the time. Plus, with cutting out gym class, that will give students who play a sport an extra class that they can take. They can be more educated while still being active and fit on their sports team.
Some students just generally hate gym. Therefore, by setting the rule that you don't have to take gym if you play a sport, it will encourage more students will try out for sports. This could benefit the school by increasing the team sports performance. There would be more participation on the sports teams and the school would be more athletic as a whole because of the greater participation. With more participation it would also help to rank the teams higher and get all the teams to a more competitive division.
People like the principal, teachers, parents, or other students may suggest that gym is a great thing for all students to take. But, it is not fair for students who play a sport to take gym because on a sports team they are getting a greater physical activity than in a gym class. Also, sports are tougher then gym class. They require more determination, strength, and heart. For sports you are required to spend every day after school, either practicing or playing in a game. Some teams can even have up to three games per week. Playing a sport takes a lot out of a student and is definitely more intense than gym class.
In conclusion, gym should only be a requirement for the students who do not play a sport. This can benefit the school by increasing the participation and sports ranking. Also sports teach everything that you learn in gym class. Every school should make this change to their graduation requirements because it would greatly benefit the school.
