As they fight a vicious beast.
The biggest example of loyalty is when Old Dan and Little Ann sacrifice themselves for Billy when he gets attacked by a mountain devil (mountain lion) on their last hunting trip they went on. In the beginning. Billy is a boy who wants dogs, not just any dogs he wants hunting hounds. Billy works for two years and saves fifty dollars to get dogs his grandfather helps him order them. When his dogs come in they come in to the town depot so he sneaks out of home in the middle of the night. to go to town but the town is 360 miles away. so it takes 3 and a half days to get there and 3 and a half days to get back. on his way back he sleeps in a cave with his dogs he hears a mountain lion and Old Dan bawls back. The biggest example of friendship was when is that when old Dan goes back to the tree to keep the coon up there. little Ann comes with him to keep him company and because their really good friends and they make beds out of leafs. And sleep out in the woods
The biggest example of victory is when old Dan and little Ann get three coons in one tree during the big coon hunt. and when little Ann wins the silver cup in the beauty contest. During this event old Dan and little Ann get lost in a storm and keep circling a tree. to keep a coon up there.
Through the sadness and struggles Billy learned that all things happen for a reason. Even though Billy had to overcome great sadness he came out as a stronger person from then on. This book is recommended to younger readers it is a good story.
