What is academic writing? How does academic writing differ from other forms of writing, such as public and business writing? What are some of the conventions of academic writing? What are some of the genres of academic writing? What is important for students to keep in mind when they begin a piece of academic writing?
What is "academic writing"? To me, academic writing is anything written in a learning aspect. Academic writing may differ slightly to greatly depending on the writing type. In my experience as a professional military employee, I have had to write public writings, such as official memorandums. There is usually no difference compared to academic writing because of the academic language used. The difference of comparison of academic writing and public writing, such as emails and text messages vary greatly. The frequent use of incomplete sentences, no capitalized letters, and shortened spelling ( Jane Aaron, 2010, p. 95) is the biggest differences with academic writing. Is important for students to keep in mind what their goals and expectations of the writing is when they begin a piece of academic writing. ( Jane Aaron, 2010, p. 90)
In an essay-style response of 100-200 words minimum, describe your past experiences with English. You may consider the following questions to help you get started: How did you approach the subject of English when you were last in school? What was the last thing that you wrote (for example, an email, a text message, a message on a post-it note, etc.)? What are the most common kinds of day-to-day writing that you do? How do you feel about yourself as a writer right now? Is there anything in particular that you would like to learn in this class?
My last approach to English the last time I was in school is very vague. I remember always trying to understand it, but getting very confused at times. English has a lot of detailed things when it comes to writing that can cause you to have a lot of mistakes. Because of the possibility of all these mistakes, I have always been nervous to approach it. The last thing I wrote was an official email. I wrote this email to another military official of senior ranking. In these emails, I do my best to ensure I am clear, consist, and as close to proper English as possible. The most common day-to-day writing that I do is text messaging. It may be a quick message to a friend, or it may be informative to other co-workers. I would like to learn something in this class to better help me in my future classes. Even though there are plenty of reading materials on listing references, I still would like to learn more. This seems to be my weakest area that I still don't understand.
