Introduction

I have chosen painting 12. When I look at this painting, my first impression is like a water bottle on the table. To describe this painting briefly, the background of this painting is using purple. Also it has a carpet under the table and a orange rectangle on the top.

Detailed Description

Element: Shape

Principle: Pattern

The first one of the element i choose is shape. Shape is very important for this painting because if this painting without any shape, it cannot form the water bottle, table and carpet. Then this painting will become boring and not vivid because without shape. The painting include two dimensions shape and three dimensions shape. First for the two dimensions, the painting includes geometric and amorphous shape. There are a orange rectangle and a black trapezoid in the painting. We can see that the rectangle and the trapezoid both have the length and width but both do not have height. We can see that the rectangle and trapezoid are two dimensions. There are not only two geometric which are the orange rectangle and the black trapezoid but also the amorphous shape which is the white bottle. Then is the three dimensions, there are a grey cylinder. We can see that it has not only length and width but also height so the cylinder is three dimensions.

There are relationship between shape and pattern. The painter uses the geometric and amorphous shape in the background. When we look at the top right corner, we can find that there are many irregular shape keeping repeat. Therefore, we can see that the painter is using amorphous shape for the pattern. Besides, we can find that there are some rectangle keeping repeat in the bot left corner. It is using rectangle which is belonging to geometric for the pattern. This is the relationship between shape and pattern.

Element: Color

Principle: Contrast of hue

The second element of this painting is color. Color is also the main element of this painting. If this painting just using black and white, this painting will be so simple. Moreover, using different types of color can make the painting having contrast. It has used neutral colors, warm and cool colors. For the neutral colors, the water bottle is using white color. The table which is trapezoid is using black color and the carpet which is cylinder is using grey color. Then for the warm and cool colors, it has used orange for the rectangle and purple for the background.

There are the relationship between color and contrast. There are two contrast in the painting. First is the contrast of neutral color. It is the bottle contrast with the table. The painter uses the neutral color black and white to make a contrast in the painting. The second contrast is warm and cool color. There has a contrast between the rectangle and the background. The painters uses the orange to make a contrast with the purple background.

Element: Value

Principle: Harmony

The last element of the painting is value. Why the value is important for this painting? It is because if the painter uses two different color for the background, it may not match with the painting and then it will cause the painting become wearisome and disordered. It cannot attract the reader. When we focus on the background, we can find that the painter is using dark purple for the left hand side and light purple for the right hand side. The dark purple’s value scale is around seven and the light purple is around three.
