1. The art differs in Europe during the 1400's and during the Middle Ages because there were new ways of adding realism to works.
2. The Renaissance was a period of great awakening. Florence was its center city in Italy.
3. A linear perspective is the use of slanted lines to make objects appear to extend back into space. Filippo Brunelleschi discovered linear perspective. One of the first artists to use it in a painting was Masaccio.
4. Leonardo da Vinci's way of using the light and dark values in the manner developed by Giotto and Masaccio was remarkable.
5. A Madonna is a work showing the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. The artist influenced by Leonardo in his paintings of Madonnas was Raphael.
6. A Pieta is a work showing Mary mourning over the body of Christ. What is unusual about the use of proportion in Michelangelo's Pieta was how Mary is much larger than her son, a full-grown man.

2. Symbolism is a Gothic feature that continued to be used by Northern Renaissance artists.
3. A major contribution of artists of the Northern Renaissance was oil paint. Jan van Eyck is credited with having discovered it.
4. Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden were similar because they were both able to reproduce each hair, each stitch in their paintings. They were different because van Eyck's pictures were calm and quiet, van der Weyden painted powerful, emotional scenes.
