Greetings in the mighty name of the Lord. I am honored to have this opportunity to speak to you this evening. The scripture that was presented to me for this evening’s message excited me. It excited me because I love the strength of these words and the power behind them. These are words of war. Words of battle and words of weapons. I think to myself that this confrontation was something incredible. Israel vs. The Philistines. This was a war. And of course in every war, you need weapons.
And as we read further into the chapter, in verse 46, David says to Goliath in response to curses and disrespect... “This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.”
Oh yes. It JUST GOT. REAL. But let’s step back for a minute.
Now i know you have all heard phrases like “I’m a soldier on the battlefield”... or “I’m a soldier, in the army of the Lord.” All of those phrases are true. All of those words are real. But I’m also here to tell you that you can be a WEAPON of GOD.
See, Goliath was the biggest, baddest, meanest monster in the Philistine Army. People say he was up to 9 feet tall. The translations sometimes list him from 6 foot 9 to 9 feet tall. He was war hardened, huge, mean and out for blood.
And David, just a small young man, never in a true war, only sent by his father to the area to check on his brothers and bring supplies. He would have never imagined being face to face with the giant Goliath. Goliath in brass shield and armament with sword and skill.
But God.
God chose David to be his weapon. He didn’t miraculously zap David with some super steroids are give him some amazing powers to fly or run super fast. God didn’t hand him millions of dollars or multiply an army at his back. He was a small guy. A pretty boy if you will. But God chose David.
David had FAITH. Goliath might have been the size of a mountain. But David had FAITH. Goliath could have been adorned with the best, strongest sleekest armor, but David had FAITH. Goliath could have had the biggest, sharpest, fastest sword and blade and shield but David.. had... faith. Saints I’m here to tell you today ALL you need is FAITH in the Lord.
Think about how many times, you have been face to face with problems in your life. How many times have you been down to your last couple dollars...that last bit of gas... the last couple items in the fridge or the pantry. What about when you just can’t figure how to get a situation going right? Or when you’re looking for ways to improve yourself... or working hard to find a place to work. We say things like “if i just had a couple more dollars” or “if i just had a couple more gallons of gas”... we say “if i just had some more food in there...” or worse “if i was someone else”.... we say things like “if i had this degree” or “that degree” or if THIS SITUATION WAS DIFFERENT.
See there’s another part to this thing. Saul offered David armor of a seasoned warrior. Saul offered him the most veteran weaponry. But David knew he had EVERYTHING he needed. To go toe to toe with the vicious beast Goliath. Thats some faith aint it?
Its easy for me to stand here and say “David had faith.” We have to seek that faith. We have to vehemently strive to utilize the POWER we have recieved from God. SO what if i don’t have the best education. So what if i don’t have the best suit or the nicest hair or the most muscles... So what if i’m not tall enough or too young or too old. I HAVE POWER. I HAVE FAITH. I HAVE GOD. Everyone knows that scripture and nowhere has it meant more than when you are facing adversity. When it looks like you can’t win. I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME.
They warned David. You’re just a boy. They tried to discourage him. They scoffed at him. Goliath mocked him and essentially spat in his face. BUT GOD. David became a WEAPON OF GOD. He didn’t worry about the Philistines power or history. He didn’t kneel because he was outmatched or outsized. There is no Weapon like Faith in God. There is no POWER like the spirit of God. What you THINK you lack is nothing compared to what you HAVE in God.
So David, staring down this monster. Emboldened with power and strength from the Lord took a stance. I love what he says.
47And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.
Remember Saints. The battle is not yours. Live in righteousness. Keep the faith. build the power. YOU are a WEAPON OF GOD.
1 Samuel 17:45
45Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
1 Samuel 17:46
46This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
1 Samuel 17:47
47And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands.
1 Samuel 17:33
33And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
