Accountability is very important because it allows for your chain of command to know where you are at at the moment. Accountability doesn't just mean showing up on time. It also means being responsible. It means that if you fail your small part of the mission which is to be on time, you must be held liable and accountable for your actions. Let's say you were supposed to depart for a mission outside of the wire on a deployment. You are late to the convoy brief, the convoy brief must be given to you again, everyone is late to mount up, and the convoy misses its departure time. The Infantry unit that is waiting to round up with your convoy for additional protection might get ambushed because your convoy was late. Accountability also reflects the responsibility the unit has over each and every person in that unit. Everyone is required to report for duty so that the commander can verify that he/she has all the unit personnel. Accountability is essential for any society to function and military accountability is no different. We are all held accountable in one way or another. For example, there are laws to obey and if we fail to be obedient, we may have to suffer the consequences set by the officials who hold us accountable. Accountability is simply being responsible for one's actions. It also is the quality or state of being accountable, which by definition means an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility. Every military personnel is responsible to perform all assigned duties in a proficient manner, and those who neglect this responsibility will be held accountable. It is crucial to the success of the military to instill accountability into each and every one of their service members.
The concept of accountability is so strictly enforced because the failure of one military member to do his or her part could result in the failure of the unit's entire mission. Accountability is a very important part of our job whether or not he or she is junior enlisted or an NCO. Accountability can also be described as being dependable. By being dependable, a Marine/sailor will arrive to work and appointments on time, meet deadlines, arrive at the right place at the right time, and always do the right thing at the right time. At FMC, the section leader and senior personnel use a Muster sheet to maintain accountability in the warehouse. It is set in place so that they will be able to maintain a proper count of what sailors/ marines are present and accounted for. Being UA can also affect the next person within your unit. If you are not present for work, your responsibilities and work load will get placed on whomever is working on your schedule which would make the mission more difficult to complete
