Although many companies/people are against labor unions I believe that it is a
necessity among the different professions to fight for better rights, wages and
benefits. It has played an important role in the history of the United States where
it has improved economy and it is still being used by many to protect their rights.
There have been cases where it has been proven that unions improves
communication and provides a better trained workforce with fewer employee
turnovers.
The reason why I think we still need unions is because the economy being as it is,
many companies are taking advantage of this, posting high profits and not raising
wages or salary for their employees. When these companies are taking
advantage of the situation and you don't have anybody to fight for your rights
then it creates an unfair situation. It may not be the right idea to raise wages
during an economic recession but if these companies are posting these high
profits then the least thing they can do is reward the ones that helped them
achieve that profit. A company is not forced to raise wages or salary for their
employees but it has shown that it can increase productivity.
Discrimination is an unfortunate event that has stained history for all races and it
is something that nowadays we still have to deal with. Discrimination in the
workplace can be portrayed in several ways. Discrimination in the workplace
can be because of age, gender or race. Some examples can be in the form of
sexual harassment, hiring of employees from one country, unequal pay for African
Americans performing the same tasks as whites, segregation of race etc. All these
factors still exist in some working environments and employees have the right to
fight for this. There are laws that have been passed that protect employees from
discrimination like EEOC which enforce laws against workplace discrimination. If
an employee feels that he/she is a victim of discrimination they should file a
complaint
