Tuskegee Medical Syphilis Study on Negro

In 1932, the Tuskegee Institute conducted syphilis medical trials. 399 Negro males were denied treatment for syphilis and tricked by the United States Public Health Service officials. Tuskegee syphilis studies were an example of racism in medicine, ethical misconduct, and government violation of personal rights . One commentator suggests the "US Public Health Service Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male" (Brawley 1998), while a Public Health Service (PHS) spokesman termed it a cooperative project of the PHS, the Tuskegee Institute, the Tuskegee Medical Society, and the Macon County Health Department in Alabama (Jones 1993, p. 7). Some contend that referring to it as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study unfairly marks the Tuskegee Institute and taints its good name (Brawley 1998), In the 1920s, the medical and public health communities hypothesized that blacks and whites differed in their response to disease (King 1998, pp. 92-7). The Tuskegee Syphilis Study has become the most transcendental, harm-maker example of racism in the medical field. It is shameful, for in an area as important as the medical one, where lives come and go, issues such as this one should never be taken in consideration by anyone who's capable of destroying or saving a life. I has shown through the years that it was an unethical experiment, and it has brought resentments that we still face in this time of life.
