Transportation From The 1500's-1950's

Did you know that in the 1500's most of the people walked anywhere they wanted to go?

In the 1500's transportation was very limited. People used walking, horses, and steam engines to get around back then. In Romeo and Juliet they used horses and carriers to give each other messages and to talk to each other. However, in the 1950's there was more advanced machinery such as the car, plane, and Motorboat. In the years 1500-1950 transportation affected people so much that people were inspired to advance to a more sophisticated century.

There were many different types of transportation in the late 1500's; one of them was horses. Horses were very big in that time because they were used for traveling, trading, and war. They were also used for riding around town. In the 1500's trade was a big source of getting food. In Romeo and Juliet they most likely used horses to get around. They also probably used horses to trade and to ride. One big thing they used horses for was to send messages to each other. However, in the West Side Story they had already advanced to cars. But horses were still used in the 1950's to farm and ride around for fun.

Another great way of transportation was cars during the 19th century. Cars are used for traveling and trading from place to place. If you wanted to go to a different city of state, a car is what you would use. In the 1950's cars were expensive to people. They were any price from $500-$2000! Today that is cheap for a car because a good car brand new is anywhere from $10,000-$40,000. "From 1930-1950 only about 1 in 10 families had a car" (History of Transportation). In the 1500's there weren't any cars but they used horses, carriers, and roads. However the 1950's still had better transportation.

Another type of transportation in the 1950's was the steam powered engine. The steam powered engine was one of the most important kinds of transportation in its time. Steam engines were also used for trade and getting food. In Romeo and Juliet you didn't see any steam powered boats. Instead, they used boats that were not steam powered. "Steam transportation was invented by Nicolas Cugnot as early as 1769" (Steam powered Transportation). Even though both Romeo and Juliet and the West Side Story had there differences in transportation they affected the future with it.

Did you know that walking was on of the few ways to travel in the 1500's? Yes, in Romeo and Juliet the story, most of the people walked to where they wanted to go. But in the West Side Story they used cars. Through the years of 1500-1950 transportation was a big part of life like it is today. Walking came in different varieties such as walking, horses, boat, and cars. Those are just a few of the many types of transportation.
