Total Quality Pioneers Paper

The following paper will be an analysis on one of the pioneers of total quality Philip Crosby. Quality and its elements will be defined along with a discussion on how the total quality elements help the pioneer in his success. In conclusion, it will be explained why the elements of quality are useful in today's business environment, and what the future of quality will bring.

In today's business environment the majority of the world's consumers require that all of the products and services have a standard quality. The reason why quality has several definitions is that standards or meanings vary between management, consumers and labor. Quality is performance to the standing expected by the customer, meeting customer's needs. The first time and every time, doing the right thing the first time. Quality is made up of elements which are the dynamic state element, products, service, people, processes, environmental elements, and superior value elements. The dynamic states that what is quality today will change in the future as business changes. The superior value states that quality is the key elements in providing superior value, superior quality, costs and services. (Goetsch, 2010.)

Total quality is the customer focus, which can be internal or external, obsession with quality and the use of scientific approaches to decision-making, and problem-solving. Philip Crosby was the director of ITT for 14 years and in 1979 opened his own company called Philip Crosby Associates because he was an expert in the field of total quality. Crosby defined quality as conformance; he is the creator of the quality vaccine and the 14 steps to quality improvement. Some of his important contributions consist of the three elements from his vaccine; they are a determination, education, and implementation. (Management Gurus, 2008.)

The elements of quality in today's business environment are important because of the worlds fast pace. The results of this condition means that consumers have no time to wait for products or services, however the consumer still expects quality from them. Consumers today expect the cheaper items to have quality to them, this forces managers and workers from all over the world to be determined to sell quality products or services to their customers. Managers and staff need to be educated so that they can implement the skills they have acquired in the creation of the desired products, services. The future of quality will rise and the price will rise also because the developing nations are expanding their incomes and becoming competition to each other, and other highly industrialized nations. Crosby is correct when he states that the managers must be determined, educated so that they can implement it in their work and educate their employees on quality at work. (Goetsch, 2010.)
