The Stamp Act Source Document
The Stamp Act of 1765 was a tax that was implemented on the American colonies by
King George III and British Parliament. The act included a sales tax in the colonies that required
all materials that were printed or produced in America to have a stamped symbol on that piece of
paper to show that it has officially been taxed and that the document is legal. Unfortunately,
paper money that was produced in the colonies had no relevance in Great Britain, no the colonies
had to pay their taxes in British currency. Because of the large population and vast territory that
the British controlled, they were able to generate a substantial amount of revenue. This revenue
was to help pay for British debt that it had accumulated during the Seven Year's War, and other
engagements that took place in North America.
This document shows official Stamp Act and explains in great detail what constitutes to
be taxed and how it is to be taxed. The document was written in 1765. The research document
was generated in 2009. This document was written to show how the Stamp Act is to be
implemented on the American colonies and explains what is to be taxed. The purpose of this
document today is to research how British Parliament was ran back during this time and how
they made progress to tax people to lower the debt that was accumulated over the course of war.
I have chosen this topic because the Stamp Act is a great and very relevant subject when talking
about the American Revolution and how the British responded to the American colonies.
