The movie, "10 things I hate about you" is the modified but modern version of Shakespeare's, "Taming of the Shrew". Both the movies revolve around the main characters lives. Which are the Kate, Bianca, Petricio, and Mr.Minola (the girl's father). The similarities in the movie and the play is they are both trying to portray why the marriage and the dating is so important in everyday world. Also the difficult thing when it comes to getting married or dating in the story is when you stay within tradition. This is that the oldest daughter get married or taken soon, and falls into the hands of a man who can take care of her. Kate is the oldest sister that is rude, outspoken, cruel, and a so called nag. On the other hand the youngest sister is Bianca a soft spoken, innocent, charming girl, that all the men want her. The settings of both the stories take place in very different centuries but similar story surroundings. The "Taming of the Shrew" has a setting in London's wealthy families. In the other hand the movie is based on the family living in California where the daughters are going to high school in Padua. In spite of the big generation gap between both the works of the play and movie the show the same struggle for the women in society, on trying to break free from the biased rules of society.
The father's condition in both stories set similar conditions for dating, but they have different mindset because of the gap in generation. The 'Taming of the Shrew" takes us to the period of male dominancy, during which women are expected to listen to the men and men are supposed to be the providers. They are also supposed to be getting married at a certain age. Now when it comes to the movie director Gil Junger has modified the movie to be similar to the movie but different in relevance. The father made the term because of the dangers and changes in American Society. For instance the issue of pregnancy before marriage, drugs, sex, and boys in general. The father knows the changes in the teen eyes so he tells his daughter of the reasons of his decision.
