These film making techniques have been used by director Gil Junger to communicate and demonstrate adolescent Journey.
Camera Angles are used in order to demonstrate and communicate the adolescent journey in 10 Thing I Hate About You. Camera distance is used to show adolescence is an emotional time and the status of certain types of adolescents which are affected by how the camera views them. A prime example of this is when Kat attended the party and became drunk beginning to dance in the midst of a crowd on a table. In this scene the camera angle used to depict Kat was known as an inferior camera angle showing Kat dancing drunk on the table which showed her status in doing this act inferior, not only for her own character perception and norm but also for the hooker type attitude she would have developed in doing that. Another example is seen when Patrick sings a solo to his love Kat at her Soccer match. It seen in this seen that the camera is a superior angle to Patrick as he sings 'Can't Get My Eyes Off You' to Kat. This symbolizes that the act that Patrick has just preformed has lifted his status from what was once an inferior person chasing Kat to what is now a person who has caught up to Kat and has won the war of taming her. These camera angels clearly show that camera angles are used to demonstrate and communicate the adolescent journey in 10 Things I Hate About You.
10 Things I hate about You also includes many lighting techniques to demonstrate adolescent Journey. Lighting is used to show the experiences of adolescents and that adolescents go through a journey during this stage from leaving childhood to entering adulthood and that sometimes this can be a difficult transition for some adolescents. A clear case in 10 Things I Hate About You were lighting is used, is at the Party scene whereby Kat leaves the Party where it is illuminated brightly and clear and moves outside to a scene where it is a darkened night and not as visible. This demonstrates that in the party there must have been excitement, delightment, enthusiasm and pleasure to a backyard that was gloomy, bleak, depressing and disheartening. Evidently in 10 Things I hate About You the director Gil Junger has demonstrated an adolescent journey through many lightning techniques that he has emphasized throughout the film.
