His mind spun wildly trying to figure out what to do next but all he could see were his memories of her. His heart ached every time he saw her face to the point that it was becoming difficult to breathe. As the weight of what he had done settled on his conscious the room swam before his eyes and his stomach rolled causing him to double over and vomit bile until there was nothing left for his stomach to heave up and his throat burned.
He lifted his head and stared at her once more. The realization that he could not live without her washed over him causing a sheen of cold sweat to stick his hair to his forehead and tears to blur his vision. Before he had consciously decided to move he had obtained a notebook and pen. He sat down at his kitchen table and penned his final words:
“She’s gone. The girl I love is dead. And I killed her. I can admit it now because by the time you read this I will be gone too and there will not be a damn thing you will be able to do about my crime. She was beautiful. Her face is forever engraved into my memory. I loved her and that is why she had to die. I needed her heart to be completely mine. I realized that her heart would never truly be mine if she was keeping it beating. As I held her in a final embrace, I ripped her heart out of her chest. If it matters to anyone, she wasn’t in pain for long. She didn’t even cry out. She just stared at me, at her heart beating feebly in my hands, as she fell away from me. Judging by the confusion plain in her innocent eyes she hadn’t even known what was happening until it was too late. The regret for what I have done has grown too great. I have no life left without the one I love. I can’t do this anymore.
Goodbye,
-Michael.”
He laid his confession beside her and propped himself up against the wall next to her, a bottle of pills in one hand and a bottle of alcohol in the other. He kept his eyes locked on where she lay as he downed the pills and drained the bottle of booze as a chaser. As he waited for the concoction to take effect he unfastened the rug he had cocooned her in and unrolled it before laying down beside her intertwining his fingers with hers and stared into her unseeing eyes until he drew his final breath.
