Few other industries are as dynamic, rapidly growing and complex as health care. Healthcare has experienced unprecedented competitive, demographic and economic challenges. The competition for the high-level executive positions is intense. Dylan, the human resources manager at the Shipley’s Memorial Hospital, is receiving an influx of resumes daily. An effective strategy to identify the best candidates for the executive positions is for Dylan to think of essential interviewing questions. One of the most critical concerns of healthcare human resources management is the determination of promising possibility for open positions who will add to the dynamic change of performance over the association. (Lombardi & Pynes, 2011). Dylan along with her interviewing panel of five members must tailor each question about the candidate’s knowledge, competencies, and experiences in the service and delivery of healthcare. Her board constitutes of her as the human resources manager, the director of the legal and ethics department, the accounting manager, the director of operations and the director of marketing. The panel’s questions are geared toward behavioral, character, competencies and performance instances.
The questions are as followed:
- Can you describe an unforeseen problem that you have encountered and how you dealt with it?
This question is aimed at finding the candidate’s reasoning and problem-solving skills. The answer will allow a glimpse of the applicant’s approach to the workplace demands, his or her clever way of thinking through issues. This type of behavior question will show how the candidate will mitigate problems and take advantage of available resources.
- How do you evaluate the financial welfare of your healthcare institution?
A healthcare executive should be able to assess and manage the finances of the facility. Frequently, he or she will control expenditures, oversee fiscal policies and procedures, allocate funds, and reports to board members, partners, and stakeholders. Therefore, the executive must possess a solid financial background. He or she must be astute in financial decisions, reports and actions, be able to engage in fundraising activities and seeking grants. Intuitive conclusions must be made to ensure the growth and profitability of the company.
3. Have you partnered with or are a member of any other organization or network that may advance of benefit this facility and this community?
Building and sustaining relationships are significant attributes of an executive leader. Active networking helps explore, renew social and governmental involvement that continuously benefit the organization and the community it serves. The answer demonstrates the applicant’s social awareness and responsibilities. It highlights his or her personal contributions to society and community.
4. What is the extent and the nature of your knowledge and experiences with healthcare laws, regulations, legislations, and reforms? And how have you applied this knowledge in the past?
He or she should be able to indicate sound knowledge of practices, legislations, and policies that govern the healthcare industry. He or she should be able to exhibit mastery of regulatory laws and the ability to efficiently communicate and astutely these rules to minimize liabilities to the hospital.
5. Recount a time when your leadership role and skills were able to influence someone, a project or an outcome?
It is crucial for candidates to develop influential leadership characters. Significant behaviors of leadership, mentorship and coaching must be fostered. Valuable leadership techniques can influence the nature, the characteristics and the way a team acts and performs. Great leaders also inspire their teammates. Leadership is also in alignment with collaboration.
