In the United States, same sex marriage has been frown upon for many reasons. On June 26th, 2015the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage would be legalized in the United States. I remember like it was yesterday, news casters were amazed at how the White House was lit up with rainbow colors in reaction to the ruling. Gay rights all over the country felt this was won after all the years of fighting for gay rights and having the ability to be recognized for what they believe in. Legalizing same sex marriage gives same sex couples the same equal rights as a heterosexual couple walking into the court house to get married. The ruling sparked many emotions throughout America, many people were upset with decision and voiced their concerns as the results to the decision. Reason such as its wrong in God’s eyes and one of the bigger reasons, what happens to the children being raised by same sex parents. Some observer’s worry that legalizing same-sex marriage would send the message that same-sex parenting and opposite-sex parenting are interchangeable, when in fact they may lead to different outcomes for children (Meezan & Rauch, 2005). Meezan and Rauch evaluated the concern of how same sex parenting would affect the children. Many viewed children being raised by same sex parents would cause some concerns with the children having issues and being confused and understanding the process. A lot people refused to abide by the ruling, in some states people quit their jobs because they refuse to acknowledge the same sex ruling. I think that society should not have the power to control anyone happiness. Yes, in the biblical days same sex marriage did not exist, so in the older community this was a major negative blow to what they believe in. Many couples were traveling far and near to the states that immediately recognized the ruling, some states were lagging with trying to understand the decision. Since the decision, many have accepted the ruling but with anything there are some who refuse to accept the decision and allow same sex couple to live freely among the community. The military also banned same sex marriage up until the Supreme Court made the decision to honor the couple’s decision to get married. I think the decision was fair and just, everyone have the opportunity to choose who they will spend the rest of their life with and not be judged based off their decision.
