Foreign students faces with many difficulties within daily life in this university :buying food in the canteen, borrowing a book in the library, even understanding important letters sent by the university`s online systems, as everything is in Hungarian. This report determines the ways how to overcome this problems based on the recommendations of SH students.
Background information
In the 21st century, countries are becoming more flexible and competitive with new development in technologies, increasing number of imports and exports, flow of foreign direct investment to a given country as well as services (education, tourism) that country can render to the other country. This is the clear example of internationalization. However, there exists another twin term “globalization”, which describes the process of economic competitiveness between nations in the international trade, investment in human capital and services (Jeffus, n.d.)
The best-known form of internationalization - is the mobility of students in higher education - a certain number of students, who study abroad. Nowadays, rapid development of distance education made national boundaries completely transparent for educational services. The reason is, employers in many countries pay more attention in hiring college graduates with an experience of studying, living and working abroad, as it indicates the adaptive capabilities of the candidates, breadth of vision, communication skills with people of different cultures.
Gradually, the flow of foreign students, crossing national borders for higher education, were perceived by the majority of host countries over like a trade, rather than aid, as in many cases, foreign students pay for their education by themselves. Without this additional income, many universities simply could not exist (Saginova ,n.d)
To form a unified global educational market, where institutions of different countries offer their products and services to all students at once, educational institution must first of all make comfortable conditions for the sake of international students (Saginova ,n.d)
Hungary, located in the Central Europe, is one of the countries which attracts many international students to obtain an appropriate knowledge with the programs such as: Erasmus+, Campus Hungary and Stipendium Hungaricum etc.
Recently, the establishment of a new program called Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program in 2013 by the Hungarian government was a new global opening policy for international students from other countries (Stipendium Hungaricum Programme, 2014).
One of the well - known university which is involved for acceptance of Stipendium Hungaricum Students is Budapest Business School.
Budapest Business School is one of the famous academic institutions in Hungary, ranking 12 place in Central East Europe, 24 place in European Union, 71 place in the world among 1298 international business schools (Ranking Web , 2014) . It is a merger of 3 academic institutions: School of Tourism and Catering, School of Finance and Accounting and School of International Management and Business (Budapest Business School, 2015).
In School of International Management and Business, there are 28 Stipendium Hungaricum Students who study at FIMB. All of them are with different backgrounds, from different nationalities and from different countries: Kazakhstan, Yemen, China, Israel, Angola, Georgia and Bosnia etc.
Problem Description
The foremost problem of any foreign student who does not speak native (Hungarian) language, but studies in Hungary can be faced with the huge problem of “language barrier”. Even in a daily life performance, international students of BBS FIMB are unable to convey what they need from the postman in the dormitory , librarian from the library , server from canteen : almost no one speaks in English , except teaching staff.
All the tablets, billboards, short nametags and other posters everything is in Hungarian. Thus derives foreign students many difficulties to understand important information on them. Moreover, the university`s building is so enormous that it is impossible to find an appropriate room of the seminars, as doorplates shows the directions of east, west in Hungarian and no any hints in English. These are the bright examples of language barriers.
Importance of the Problem
In my questionnaire, in 12th question , I asked Stipendium Hungaricum Students would they recommend BBS FIMB to study their fellow friends. Surprisingly, only 3 people answered to recommend, remaining 4 of them answered negatively. As our university accepts international students, it is in its interest and responsibility to meet the needs of the foreign students . If there is no any comfortable conditions or relevant help in the field of studies or usual life for foreigners , it can damage to the whole reputation of the educational institution.
