The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international organization that works toward the development of web standards. The purpose of the W3C is to create standards that make the web accessible to all people, no matter what kind of hardware, software, network, language, culture, location or mental or physical ability. They are administered by a joint effort among three institutions Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), The European Research Consortium for Informatics and mathematics (ERCIM) and Keio University. Tim Berners-Lee the inventor of the World Wide Web along with Dr. Jeffery Jaffe leads the W3C. However, the web community such as organization and individuals play a huge role in reviewing and providing input on the specifications created. W3C not only creates standards but also provide tutorials and tools for web professionals to hone their skills.

Becoming a member of W3C is advantages because this organization can increase professional knowledge and abilities in the career field of web design, applications, and development. The W3C also provides tutorials and cheat sheets that clearly show the member how to implement standards so that they can create websites that anyone can access. They also help increase awareness of new web technologies that are vital in today's rapid development landscape. W3C also gives you browser and authoring tools to help improve web development skills. One of the tools that has proven valuable when creating a website is the Markup Validation service. A member can run a website through the service to make sure that the website is semantically correct. This is important because the errors in HTML will cause a website to render differently depending on the browser. All of this knowledge is critical in succeeding as web professional.
Career Success
W3C is an important organization for any person who is pursing success in web development career fields. The reasons are numerous first standards separate visual code such as Cascading Style Sheets from Hyper Text Markup Protocol. This makes it much easier to develop and maintain websites. Second semantic markup is rendered in any browser even if the browser does not support all of the standards. This is vital because of the numerous web browsers that are available such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Apple safari plus the countless mobile devices that can access the web.
