Professional Development Plan Paper

About Myself:

I am xxx studying in xxx college

My father works in a public sector company and my mother is a home maker.

I am interested in mechanical engineering and I want to pursue a job that is related to mechanical engineering.

First, let me start the paper by stating my final goal and my way backwards. My final goal or objective in life professionally is to have a job that

1. Gives me Work Satisfaction.

2. Is interesting (not mundane).

3. Has moderate level of work tension.

4. Pays me enough to lead my life with a standard of living that is greater than or equal to my present standard of living.

5. Gives me a reasonable amount of time to spend with my family.

To achieve these above mentioned goals, there are many ways or paths. And I am going to analyze the various ways which I know can help me achieve these goals.

According to the choices available to me in the immediate future, the future path can be divided into 3 ways.

1. Taking a Core job

2. Going for higher studies (MS or M.Tech in engineering)

3. Taking a Non-core job

4. Going for higher studies (MBA)

Now let us analyze the path lead by each of these choices.

Taking a Core job

By taking a core job in the immediate future after my B.Tech, I will be working on a core field for some years as a field engineer or so. During the beginning years I will be learning a lot about my field of work. And once the learning phase is over, my work becomes regular or mundane till I become well experienced. Then there will be promotions to a more managerial job where I should make sure that things get done in time. If I am good at this, then I may reach the top of the ladder in the managerial side. Or after some experience in the managerial side I can start up my own company which will involve a lot of managerial skills. So by choosing this path, I need to use both my engineering skills and managerial skills in my long run. The level of work tension in this path is moderate.

Going for higher studies (MS or M.Tech in engineering)

By taking up higher studies in engineering after my B.Tech, I will gain a better expertise in my field of engineering. After the MS or M.Tech, the paths that I can choose are either to do a PhD or go for a job (a core job of course) or go for higher studies (MBA). If I go for a PhD after my MS or M.Tech, I will end up getting a job in the research and development (R&D) field or a professor in a university where I can pursue research and teaching for future generations. If I choose to get a job after my MS or M.Tech, I will be working either in the R&D sector of a company or in a job which requires specialized knowledge about the field. Now once I enter into the R&D sector, I will follow a path similar to the core job path (case1) but in this case the job will be more challenging and less mundane. The level of work tension in this path is lower when compared to the previous path. And this path allows a reasonable amount of time to spend with my family.

And if choose to go for higher studies (MBA) after MS or M.tech, the path will be similar to the path followed in case3 which is mentioned below.

Going for higher studies (MBA)

After taking up higher studies (MBA), I either can get a job in the field of my MBA degree and I can climb up the ladder in the company to the highest level or can start up my own business. This will lead to a completely different path of life professionally. This path is completely dependent on my managerial skills. And this path generally leads to a life which offers more money and more work tension than the previous paths. Also the amount of free time offered by this path to spend with my family is less.

Taking a Non-core job

By taking a Non-core job (ie. management, finance, consultancy, etc.), I will gain experience in the particular job and I will go up the ladder in the company. But the level of promotions may get affected because of the lack of a MBA degree. After this I can either continue to remain in the
