There are five personal conflict styles. Each person handles conflict differently. The best approach to understand the behaviors that drive each style. Each style meets the individual needs and impacts the other person also.
Competing is the first conflict style. It relies on aggressive communication. The people that fall it into this category seek control over the discussion. If they lose control of the conversation, it results in failure to meet their needs. Accommodating, is a soothing conflict style. These individuals attempt to be diplomatic, they allow the groups needs to overshadow their own person needs. Preservation of their relationships is important to them. Avoidance, is the negative perception of conflict and is a common response. Feelings and views get bottled up until they become too large to ignore. Individuals are often confused due to the fact that feelings are never expressed and it destroys the relationship in the long run. When people give and trade, it is considered compromising. Compromises are generally do not meet our needs entirely. Due to this, a lack of trust and the avoidance of risk-taking peruses. There last conflict style is collaborating. It is the process of pooling the parties’ needs and goals to reach a conclusion that is beneficial to all involved. It is both assertive and cooperative. It allows the potential to exceed past our own individual.
Dependent on the situation, I believe that all individuals use all the different conflict styles. If it is a personal relationship, one might be more competitive and compromising; in a workplace environment, it may be compromising and collaborating. We each use a different method given the circumstance, there is no style that dominates in my encounters. I have engaged in several quizzes to asses my conflict style. Each one gives me the same results, competitive. I believe I am competitive by nature. I so not like to come in second place and I love to be knowledgeable about the things I am studying. Even though I may be competitive, I do believe, as I already stated, it depends on the situation I am involved in.
