Dear Board of Education,
Have you ever danced? Have you ever ridden a bike through the park on a warm, summer's day? Have you ever felt the thrill of skiing down a huge, steep hill? Well, I'm sure many of you have, and you probably enjoyed those activities very much. They are great, thrilling and fun ways to exercise, too. So, why not involve them in our district's physical education curriculum? P.E. should teach various ways to stay fit, and it should appeal to the students. If you're not good at playing sports, P.E. could seem like torture. Also, introducing these new activities to students will create new interests and hobbies. Since I have started dancing, I have made a lot of new friends, and created a passion for myself.
I was six years old when my mom took me to my first dance lesson. It was in the cold, hard basement of my teacher's home, where I had to dance without stopping for a half hour. And when your six years old, a half hour of hard work seems like years. After that class, I never wanted to go back, since my legs hurt so much. But my mom dragged me there anyways, even though I cried and threw a tantrum. But, when I got there the second class didn't seem so bad. I actually enjoyed it, and I met a few other girls my age. And after about four classes, I loved to go to dance class. I would wait the whole week looking forward to it, counting down the days. It was a place where I could have fun and be with my friends at the same place. But, now years later, I still respect dancing. I see it as an art. I learn something new each class and I know it's a great way to stay fit while having fun. You gain a proper posture which helps stabilize me, and prevents damage, to joints, ligaments and the spine. Also, while dancing, I increase my mental ability by learning to multitask. I have to think of hands, feet, and expression all at the same time. I believe dancing is truly an all in one activity. You learn something, you are getting fit, you enjoy yourself, you get to socialize with new people, and you are preventing future health issues by doing so. You may be thinking, well dancing is a single person thing. And my answer is no. Dancing could be single, duet or even a large group. Teamwork could be incorporated into every aspect of dance. For example, there is a line dance called the samba. It is relatively easy to learn and you can do it with as many people as you wish. But, I am not saying that dancing is the only activity we must do in P.E. class.
