2. Maintains eye contact when interacting with children. Encourages same behavior in all children.

4. Speaks with individual children often. Calls children by name.

5. Establishes and carries out reasonable limits, knows where boundaries are and when to make exceptions. States directions in positive terms.

6. Utilizes non-punitive ways of dealing with inappropriate behavior. Can exercise authority without undermining child's self worth. For example, does not blame, criticize, embarrass or humiliate child in front of the group.

7. Respects the child. Does not talk down to child and talk about child in front of him/her.

8. Listens attentively to each child. Shows interest and affection.

9. Recognizes and focuses on child's strengths and ways to support that strength and builds on them.

10. Encourages children to talk about feelings and develop alternative ways of problem solving. Looks for what the child is trying to communicate underneath behavior.
