Explanation of the Normalization
Below is a picture which identifies tables needed of the Entities and Attributes for the Driver's Log on the Huffman Trucking Intranet before the normalization process.
The repeating groups which have been identified are the following: Off Duty Start Time 1, Off Duty Stop Time 1, SleeperBerth Start Time 1, SleeperBerth Stop time 1, Odometer Start 1, Odometer Stop 1. In order to get these items into 1NF, 2NF, and 3NF we must do the following:
1. Remove repeating element or groups of elements.
2. Have no partial dependencies on a concatenated key.
3. Have no dependencies on non-key attributes.
This repeating group has been removed and placed into another table called "TIMETYPE".
Co-Driver Name has been removed from the Driving Log as we can located the DriverID details from the DRIVER table.
Violations table-the State/Municipality Issues Citation is removed and a new table "STATE" has been added. This table has holds StateId and State?MunicipalityName.
EMERGENCYCONTANCT table was created for storing emergency contact information. This table will be helpful in listing more than one contact person.
The trailer information has been removed and listed in its own TRAILER table created.
Please note that a new ERD (below) has been created, additionally, a relationship diagram is under a report form for the Huffman within the database.
