In this days, companies and multinationals find themselves working and performing in an area that it`s in a fasting growth and faster change than ever. ‘Firms need to adapt themselves to market developments and they need to build on the strengths of their resource bases and activity systems’ (de Wit B and Meyer R., 2004, p249). Companies must learn quickly, and consider this changes in their own benefit so that they can keep up with the technology and competition. The experts in the field would call this business strategy.
To start with Nokia was once the world`s biggest producer of mobile phones, a Finnish multinational corporation specialized in providing services and telecommunication equipment. A company who for many years has provided mobile phones all around the world, famous for they durability and controlled the market with their great motto “connecting people”. Nokia was founded in 1865 and originally started as a ground wood pulp mill and by the end of the century adding in their business portfolio electricity generation. Since 1865 Nokia has offered a variety of products and services, to the consumers’ needs such as mobile phones, computer hardware, Tv`s, Satellite carriers, Cameras, Pocket radios etc, and “By the year of 1994 the company goal was to sell 500,000 units of the company`s 2100 series phone, but the ground-breaking product was so tune with the market that 20 million units were sold “.
Since 1994 Nokia evolved into a global company and several industries and after the 1994 success in selling 20 million units of mobile phones, the company predicted a huge opportunity in the mobile phone industry and believed in their strengths and the technology they had in this sector and finally conclude that their main focus and target should be the mobile phone industry. Over the years Nokia has become a successful company and as year had pass and technology has changed this affected Nokia. Today Nokia has been challenged by companies like Apple and Samsung and lost the market due competitor`s pressure and its inability to quickly adapt to respond the competitor. “Samsung has become the world`s largest cell phone maker in 2012, overtaking Nokia for the first time” according to Douglas Perry Political factors
In Uk political factor represents an important criteria for Nokia. The fact that Nokia is a global company, any change in government laws regarding the export ant import of products cand seriously affect the sales. To give an example, let`s look at country like Egypt and Lybia where political riots has forced Nokia to diminish their market. Another political factor that may affect the company in the Uk is taxes. This can affect the company revenue beacause of corporation tax and the way that the customers spend their money on Nokia products. The higher the tax is, the higher mobile phone prices will go up affecting both demand and supply.Which is why today the coporation tax in the Uk has beel lowerd in a way to encourage economical and business sector and yet tax evasion is still practiced by almost any major company on the market. Nevertheless from a global point of view the actually politic system in UK provide a significan political low risk for companies in which can operate. To be successeful a company must follow the laws of the country within operates.
