Job Summary

The company that I chose to research was Apple Inc. Every day, business customers come to the Apple Store to discover what powerful, easy-to-use Apple products can do for them. Apple Inc. engages in the design, manufacture, and marketing of mobile communication and media devices, personal computers, and portable digital music players. The company also sells various related software, services, peripherals, networking solutions, and third-party digital content and applications. The company's business strategy utilizes its ability to design and develop its own operating systems, hardware, application software, and services to provide its customers new products and solutions with integration and innovative design. The company supports a community for the development of third-party software and hardware products and digital content that complement its offerings. The company's strategy also includes expanding its distribution network to reach customers and provide them with a sales and post-sales support experience (www.investing.businessweek.com). The position that I would like to fill is that of Human Resource Business Partner. Human Resources are responsible for recruiting the most talented people in the world, helping them develop new skills, and supporting them throughout their careers. From benefits to training, communications to employee relations, human resource keeps employees engaged so we can continue to create exceptional products and customer experiences (www.apple.com).

Job Description

Specific responsibilities: Business Knowledge: Displays a depth of understanding of the business organizations, including key business functions and processes and a passion to build business acumen. Organizational Development and Design: Knowledge of reshaping organizational structure and roles. Understands the needs of the organization in terms of achieving maximum organizational performance and efficiencies. Assist the business in alignment of structure, process, rewards, metrics and talent to assist with the alignment of the business strategy. Consults and influences managers on key organizational and management concerns. Talent & Performance Management: Provides advice and counsel to managers and employees on all performance related issues, including identifying key talent, succession planning, recognition and rewards, attendance/performance issues, performance improvement, and terminations. Compensation/Benefits: Executes compensation and benefits programs (annual salary planning process, salary surveys and analysis, benefit programs and employee services). Partners with management and Benefits to assist with the management of leaves, disabilities, and Worker's Compensation. Special Projects: Contributes to special and cross-functional projects as needed. Training: Understands the training/development needs and acts as liaison with Apple University to provide appropriate training to the organization. HR Metrics: Provides insightful reports and analysis of essential HR data to line management. Recommends programs and/or enhancements as necessary (www.apple.com).

Discuss ways that goal setting could be used to motivate your performance after you fill the position.

Uncertainty about the future and the complexity of today's environment overwhelm many managers and cause them to focus on operational issues and short term results rather than long term goals and plans. However, planning generally positively affects a company's performance. In addition to improving financial and operational performance, explicit goals and

plans at each level benefit organizations because they send important messages to both external and internal audiences (Draft, pg. 160, 2010). Goal setting is a powerful way of motivating people, and of motivating yourself. Goal setting gives you a larger sense of responsibility and accomplishment once the acquired goals are reached. Goal setting theory is generally accepted as among the most valid and useful motivation theories in industrial and organizational psychology, human resource management, and organizational behavior. Locke's research showed that there was a relationship between how difficult and specific a goal was and people's performance of a task. He found that specific and difficult goals led to better task performance than vague or easy goals (www.mindtool.com). Goal setting can help me create a clear plan for what I hope to achieve within the company as their new human resource business partner. Goal setting also can help me create goals that will challenge and motivate me to achieve the goals that I set for the organization and myself. I would use strategic planning to accomplish the strategic and tactical goals of the company. Strategic goals are broad statements of where the organization wants to be in the future; pertain to the organization as a whole rather than to a specific division or department (Draft, pg. 164, 2010). These goals will be the plans of what we want the company to look like two to five years from now. Tactical goals are goals that define the outcomes that major divisions and departments must achieve for the organization to reach its overall goals (Draft, pg. 165, 2010). The tactical goals of our organization would be the cross training of individuals so that they can switch to different jobs in different sectors of the company to meet the demands for growth in our organization.
