Most people consider fairy tales as fictional stories for children that teach good morals. Since it is for children, it should not have any scenes that contain violence, brutality and other awful things that may influence children's minds. One reason for the difference between the two versions is the gruesomeness of the original story. The way it was presented by Hans Christian Andersen was way too morbid for children. Given that media have more impact on others, Disney had to adjust the story for the kids because it is their target audience. They added likable characters (Sebastian, Flounder and Scuttle) to make the story lighter and enjoyable for them. Second is that media is a form of advertisement. They did not add several musical and dance numbers just to make it fun, but also to promote the world of music. Third is the difference in media form. Books rely on descriptions while movies rely on visuals and effects. Since movies are more explicitly shown, the unpleasant scenes must be modified. And lastly, Most Disney movies have a trademark of 'happy ever after". Being a Disney movie, they also made the story happily ever after to make it suitable for the general audiences.
