There have been many hoaxes made since the myths of mermaids came about. In the 17th century a man displayed what he said to be a mermaids hand.In the 19th century another man displayed what was said to be the body of a mermaid. Many people tried to fabricate parts of mermaids body's using similar animals to take the place of them.Monkeys and fish were often ill stitched together and were passed as remnants of mermaids. This Is where I believe people started to lose hope,or in other words stop believe that mermaids where real. Every time proof was offered to clarify that mermaids were real they often found out later that what they thought was real was actually a hoax or a ploy for attention. It leaves people distrusting or in the words of Andrew David Thaler,"It's not satire. It's not parody. It's a giant middle finger to the public."

In conclusion, for many centuries men who fair the seas have come home with sories to tell, both beautiful or horrific, about the beauties that sing to sailor though the mist. They have told of their grace and their illusive beauty. Whether these half-women, half-fish exist is still a mystery that I believe modern civilization clings to. From Ariel to the blood-thirsty water-maidens of the last Pirates of the Carribeans, the mermaid continues to be a common household term that keep little girls dreaming, and young boys hoping. One thing is for sure, if these mermaids really do exist, sailors sure are having a terrible time catching them! But maybe because of the lack of evidence, it is what keeps us hoping, that somewhere out there, there are creatures so beautiful, so fair, so elegant, that to capture one and to see the beauties of legend face to face would not be the beginning of believing, but the end of dreaming about a world, and beautiful creatures unseen.
