Learnings from HBO sessions

Organizational behavior is the study of individual and group behavior in organizational settings. OB examines attitudes, personality, and performance within an organization by examining both individual and group behavior on a regional, national, or global level. We study why employees behave the way they do and how to manage these behaviors so that the organization can achieve optimal performance. In our competitive, complex, and constantly changing world, organizations must be both efficient and effective in what they do. To do this, organizations must have competent employees that know how to work together to reach organizational goals. As a result, it is important to understand how to build and maintain a competent and cooperative work force. By studying organizational behavior, both employees and managers come to understand what makes people behave the way they do. Employees can use this knowledge to increase their own job satisfaction and improve work performance. Managers can use organizational behavior to accomplish goals and help employees achieve optimal performance. More importantly, learning about organizational behavior will help a person to understand his or her own behaviors, attitudes, ethical views, and performance, as well as those of the people with whom they will be working. This type of knowledge will assist them in working effectively with managers, colleagues, and subordinates.

Both management and leadership functions involve interacting with people and aligning them in a desired direction. Since OB is the study of how people are motivated and act in dynamic environments, this understanding is critical for successful management & leadership. Without such understanding, we will be operating with prior experience and guesswork. The evidence-based approach also recognizes the interchange between theory and practice. Theory is generalized practice, which does require some customization for the many, minor differences that exist between a specific situation and the generalization. It is therefore critical that these differences are identified based on objective observation and evaluation of subjective actions, which take you back to understanding organization dynamics.

The above-mentioned points are exactly what I learnt in the HBO sessions. The importance of behavior in our day to day and work life, I gained an understanding of my own behavior the reason behind my reactions to the different situations and how to manage them. The sessions helped me understand the basics and dynamics of interpersonal relations and how to improve my interpersonal skills. I was able to implement some of these learnings in my day to day life and also significantly improved my skills. The Outbound sessions help me understand the team dynamics and helped me learn that to complete a task a right approach and team work is important. The lessons also taught me the essentials of managerial and leadership roles, the common attributes that are present in manager and leaders and also how to develop those qualities in me.
