INTRODUCTION TO THE DIBRUGARH DISTRICT
Brief History And Geography Of The District
Dibrugarh which is the headquarter of the district, derived its name from Dibarumukh. The name is derived from the mouth (mukh) of the river Dibaru or Dibru (Bodo word dibru, a blister) during the reign of Siuhungmung, Pharsengmung Borgohain, Chao Siulung, Kilong fought against the Chetia King who was defeated in the battle and surrendered before the Ahom King. Dibarumukh was a renowned encampment of Ahoms during Ahom Chetia War.
The present Dibrugarh district was carved out of undivided district, consisting of present Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district in 1989. Originally, the district was established on 29.3.47 in the name of Lakhimpur district, with its head quarter at Dibrugarh.
The Dibrugarh District extends from 27 degree 5' 38" N to 27 degree 42' 30" N Latitude and 94degree 33' 46" E to 95dgree 29' 8" E longitude.
