I will be answering based on my current experience with the Human Resources department with the Simon Property Group which is one of the biggest retail business and has a big HR department. This department keeps track of all the personal information of the employees of a certain company, reports and analyze employee information. Manages company related documents such as employee handbooks, emergency evacuation procedures, and safety guidelines. This department is also in charge of benefits administration that includes enrollment, status changes, and personal information updating. Shares complete integration with payroll and other company financial software and accounting systems. It manages new recruits as well as administering ability test in order to qualify for the interested position and may offer advanced education for the current employees. Because of all the confidential data human resources manages it is important to protect all this data by developing a reputable information system that is able to do so.
Human resources use this data to report earnings to the IRS for each employee. It also releases information t other government agencies, such as the child support department, social security, medicare, unemployment if is a termination, etc.
When it comes to policies, all the data is managed within Human Resources and it is important to make it accessible to each employee. Human resources also keeps attendance and paid time off use, pay raises and history, pay grades and positions held, performance development plans, training received,disciplinary action received, high potential employee identification,
which could include fingerprints, picture of the individual, key access cards, etc.
