Imperialism is a policy by a stronger nation to attempt to create an empire by dominating weaker nations economically, politically, culturally, or militarily. Imperialism helped shape America Foreign Policy in many ways. With imperialism, America was able to accomplish building the Panama Canal; we were able to build a navy base around Pearl Harbor, and America as a whole, became a stronger country dealing with Foreign Relations.
With imperialism, America was able to accomplish building the Panama Canal. This was a huge advancement for foreign policy because of shorter trading routes between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through Central America. Without the use of imperialism, ships would've still had to go around the continent of South America, which was about 13,000 miles. The construction of the Panama Canal also generated a major staging area for American military forces, making the United States the dominant military power in Central America.
With the use of imperialism, America was able to expand our military bases to show foreign countries what we were capable of. When the U.S. took the island of Hawaii as an American territory. The U.S. Navy was especially interested in Hawaii's port on the Island of Oahu. This was Pearl Harbor; America now had Naval power over the Pacific Ocean.
We gained various territories with the use of imperialism. We Annexed Hawaii and we launched a surprise attack in Manila Bay and destroyed Spain's entire Pacific fleet in seven hours. We expanded our territories and became a stronger country, because of us taking over other countries.
In conclusion, Imperialism helped shape America, and America still has the largest economy in the world, the firepower and global status to, almost unilaterally, engage in wars as immersive as Iraq, and a powerful cultural resonance because of imperialism
