I believe that Tabaco products (cigarettes) and as it appeals to consumers have considerable declined over the pass decades and the rate of smokers in the U.S. continues to decline. Consumer are becoming enticed to smoke due to factors such as; higher tobacco prices, hard-hitting media campaigns against smoking, graphic health warnings on cigarette packs, consumers are becoming more aware of health hazards from smoking and second hand smoke from cigarettes, smoke-free policies and programs that provide immediate assistance to those looking to quit, and new innovative device where smokers can get the effect of smoking with out smoking Tabaco (products like the electronic cigarette).
As with any consumer product, tobacco industry marketing efforts show clear evidence of targeting specific population subgroups and using themes and strategies designed to build brand loyalty and market share. I believe it is a difficult task to narrow down the target market demographics of Tobacco companies due to the large variety of tobacco products. Various cigarette brands attempt to appeal to a specific group of consumers. There are tobacco products and their promoted images largely determine the masculine- feminine dichotomy, brand that attempt to appeal to younger ages with flavored tobacco and even brands that appeal to particular races through illustrations in the advertising world.
Three (3) recommendations for possible action marketers of the Tabaco industry (cigarette companies) could take to address the product's declining appeal to consumers are as followed; (1) These companies should study consumers demographics more, identify the main reason for the decline in consumers. (i.e.) If a large causation is consumers concerns with health hazard perhaps marketing cigarettes that is filter, it results in a mild decrease in the amount of carcinogens. (Consumers will feel the decreases amount of this chemical makes cigarettes less hazardous) (2) Cigarette companies could contribute a small percentile of their profits to research studies (of effects of cigarettes and how can this be altered) perhaps even donate to treatments of ailments that can be caused by cigarettes. (3) These companies should compare their products to products that also potentially harmful to consumers health. (Advertise cigarettes in comparison to alcohol or other additive drugs)
The best foreign county to market this product would be more European and liberal countries. Greece in particular currently has the highest annual per capita consumption of tobacco/cigarette products. European countries are a little more liberal, the product is less regulated by government official and people in this target country tend to less adverse effects associated with the product in other counties. While Americans are less healthy than Europeans along some dimensions (like obesity), Americans are significantly less likely to smoke than their European counterparts.
