Homeless to Harvard
There are many things going through my mind when I watch this movie. Liz and her sister Lisa where two children with drug addicted parents, and where living a life that no one would want to live, including me. Everyone these days frown upon homelessness, truth is I did too. I believe the main point of this story is that we as humans don't really know what it's like to not have a home or family who will care about you and will tell you they love you every day, unless you have been homeless on the streets with nothing but your dignity. Truth is I could never do what Liz did and live out in the world with nothing and this got me thinking how it would change everything I don't think I would be the same person I am today.
Liz goes to school 2-3 times a month just to take a test, even though she always got 100%. I think she is a really smart girl, for school that is but not going to school is her biggest mistake. She refers to her mom later in the movie, "she was like my baby", which meant that her mom never took care of her; it was always Liz taking care of her mom. I love my mom and am grateful for everything she does, but if I was little and had to take care of my mom, I don't know if I could do that. My mom every day tells me she loves me. Liz is a child that picks out the best in people she believes her mom loves her even though her mom said she was a mistake. I don't know how someone could go through something like that and be able to finish the day, I know I couldn't.
The city sleeps so silently, but when those people are sleeping there are cold, wet, and hungry adults and children sleeping on the streets or subways just like Liz. When I think of this a tear come to meet my cheek. Here I am with my house and warm bed with loving parents to watch over me, when children like Liz grow up having nothing. She goes from her unfit home to a shelter where she could of been dead if she didn't watch herself, I just don't get how someone could do that. She gets out and lives with her mom and sister and grandfather where they are doing pretty well until her mom is getting even sicker and is drinking a lot, and her grandfather doesn't even care about any of them. When this goes through my mind it changes everything you don't really know a person or what's going on with then till you see it first hand, children bully maybe because they just do it to make them look tough or because they are hurting at home or inside because something bad is happened to them.
Truth is when we do projects in class about what we would do if we could help someone. Everyone always say help the homeless give them shelter then they will be happy, but I see now that I wouldn't just give them a place to sleep this movie changes my options, I would try to get them
