Homeless Persons

Abstract

        As we know when it comes to people in the United States there are about 3.5 million people who are living in our country that don’t have nowhere to go they are living in shelter that give them a temporary place to stay for a short time.  Homeless people are to be an individual in our society who don’t have permanent home, they may live under a bridge, in the woods, in a vehicle, or even in an abandoned building so that they can stay warm at night.  In America there are women and children as well as men that are homeless because of the loss of a job, domestic violence, or natural disasters all over our country.

        The profile of a homeless person is that the majority will be between twenty-five and forty-four years of age.  People who are homeless have the lack of supports from their community and this makes it difficult for them in their life such as keeping a job because the car that they was driving has broken down and they don’t have any other means of transport ant and now this can become a financial crisis to the individual and this would lead to the cause of been very homelessness.

What is Homelessness

        Homelessness is where million and millions of people are living on the street, staying in shelter due to the lack of housing; they are even living in the park, subway, or living in a unstable or non-permanent situation.  A homeless person can also be considered as “double up” which they cannot maintain their housing and have to move with friends and family.  If people are living in these temporary situation that are not meant for human habitation are considered to be homeless.  There are several individual for homeless people: 1. A family that stay in a place that is not designed for sleeping accommodation for a child, women, or men, such as staying in a train station, or camp ground.  2. Family who are living in hotels, motels, which are privately operated by a shelter, these arrangements are provided by federal, and local government programs for people with low-income.  3. Another way a person is homeless who they are evicted by the court and have to be out between 14 to 30 days of their notice.

        Homelessness has become the state of vulnerability.  However this can become a permanent status for an individual who has been alienated from our society, this is very hard for a human being.  With unemployment cutbacks there are about 250,000 to 3 million who are homeless in the United States, with this complex situation going on there is about 633,782 who are homelessness.  Homelessness is defined in four types: Literally Homeless, Imminent Risk of Homelessness, Homeless under Federal Statues, and Fleeing and Attempting to Flee DV.  This is a diverse upon family who endure homelessness due to high housing costs, unemployed, illness and loss of a job.  While been homeless there are program to assist an individual such as Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing (HEARTH) Act of 2009 which is a program to help assist people who are in need of a home, help them save their homes. The HEARTH Program is defined as family who lack a fixed adequate place to sleep during the night.

What Causes Homelessness

        Homelessness is caused by several things like loss of a job, natural disasters, and family break-up, there are also the highest and shortage of housing is because people can’t afford to keep up the expensive with their percentage of income been low.  A family living on an annual salary of $25,750 with five children and the cost of utilities, rent is sometime hard to keep up the payment because they have to supply the need of their family as well.  Poverty and joblessness is another cause of homeless, because it is a closer link to homelessness.  When individual lack income they will be forced to choose between their family needs like childcare for the children, healthcare so that they can have benefits for the family, or even transportation so that they can get around.  A high proportion of homeless are people who are employed but their wages are very sufficient to have a stable household been that the job that they are on don’t provide high job security.  Most homeless individuals have an income of less than $200 dollar per month.

        There is also legal issues that can arise to been homelessness or having a secure permanent housing in our society, communities. With some barriers issues like people who has had some recent convictions or any problems with the law are access to subsidized housing program such as HUD or Section 8 this can be a barrier to affordable housing development.

        Some leading causes of homeless and characteristics of population, this issue has been a remaining concern of the United States.  The causes and characteristics are identification this is where people are living without a home and have all different backgrounds and nationalities, two theory that are prevailing to cause homelessness are consider to lack of public assistant, mental health and the other one is poor management of  your finance, and excessive substance use.  Societal-based causes and personal problems are the features that were found in sociologists depending on some of the circumstances within the homelessness.  Under the” long-term” lifestyle there are three categories: 1. Episodic this means individuals who have between five incidents totaling within 266 days, 2. Transitional is where they been homelessness as result of an incident of 59 days.  Lastly, is Chronic where the individual had two incidents totaling 650 days or more within these levels?  Illness and Injury is another cause of homelessness because when a family member have no wages coming in then the whole family can suffer from this loss, and without health insurance this push an individual into severe debt or lead to homelessness as well.
