Greek Gods Storytelling Hour

Many, many years ago, Zeus and Hades had a big falling out. Hades tried to overthrow Zeus and take his position as ruler of the gods. Zeus became furious over the betrayal, and banished Hades to the Underworld for good.

Hades quickly grew tired of being banished to the Underworld and not being able to leave. So he devised an elaborate plan to escape from the Underworld and once again attempt to overthrow Zeus and banish him to the Underworld instead. To accomplish this mission, he would employ the help of Eros and Hera.

Hades convinced Eros to shoot Hera with a love arrow that would make her fall in love with him. Eros reached into the back of his quiver of arrows, and pulled out an arrow. He lifted his bow, pulled back the string with the arrow, aimed and fired at Hera. His plan worked. Hera professed her love for Hades to Zeus. Zeus became furious with Hades and threw a lightning bolt at him, but it hit the earth instead. Rocks shifted, and a huge canyon formed in the ground. The canyon was huge and it stretched for miles and miles. Hades was thrilled. He now had a way out of the Underworld. His plan was a success….or was it?

Hermes was on his way delivering messages to the gods when he came across this enormous canyon, and was shocked at the sight. When Hermes touched the bottom of the canyon, he slipped through, and fell into the Underworld. He ran as fast as his winged shoes could take him and, climbed out back to Earth. Hermes quickly ran back to Zeus to tell him what he found. Zeus was very concerned. He had no way of closing off the canyon, and keeping Hades trapped in the Underworld.

Zeus called upon Poseidon for help. Poseidon suggested filling the canyon with water. He lifted his trident, and pointed it at the canyon floor. A large plume of water came from the Pacific Ocean, and crashed into the bottom of the canyon, creating a large river. The water sealed the opening that was created by the lightning bolt, preventing Hades from leaving the Underworld. This is how the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River were created.
